After studying in Stuttgart, Vienna and London, Gaupp joined the studio of Carl Theodor von Piloty in Munich in 1873, where he focused on genre painting before taking a study trip to Italy in 1878 that inspired him to turn towards portraiture.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
