Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.
Appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts in 1873, Gebhardt specialized in religious painting inspired by the Dutch and German masters of the 15th and 16th centuries, the people in his paintings frequently appearing in the characteristic manner and fashion of that period.
A few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
