Facetiously inscribed in broad Bavarian dialect to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "No sieg'st, do is scho's Autogramm - Möcht aber jetzt auch deines ham. Aber geschrieben nicht auf so schandigs Papier. Auf Butter wär's scho liaber mir [...]".

Influenced by British and French landscape painters, especially from the Barbizon School, Heffner specialized in depicting lonely sceneries without any trace of human civilization, inspired by his trips to England, Italy, Bavaria and the Baltic Sea.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
