Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Die Kunst eines Volkes ist der Prüfstein seines 'Ichs' [...]".

After two years in Chicago, New York and San Francisco, Herrmann worked in Paris for the satirical magazine "Le Rire" from 1895 onwards, publishing prints and illustrations under the pseudonym "Henri Héran". He moved to Berlin in 1906 and exhibited a large number of etchings, drypoints and other printed works at the 1914 "Große Berliner Kunstausstellung".

Postmark on verso slightly showing through. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
