Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

A co-founder of the Munich Secession, Hierl-Deronco made a name for himself with his historical paintings "Gefangennahme Ludwig XVI. in Varennes" and "Sturm auf die Tuilerien", and, facilitated by his relationship with the counts Ricciardelli, created a series of 17 portraits in Rome, including eight portraits of Pope Pius X.

Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
