A representative of Classicism and inspired by Italian Renaissance, Hildebrand was a leading artist in monumental and fountain sculpture and set out his artistic theories in his book "Das Problem der Form in der Bildenden Kunst", published in 1893.
Two faint brownstains; tiny creases near left corners. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
