A member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, Hildebrand initially focused on decorative painting but soon turned towards genre scenes, particularly featuring Martin Luther and Queen Louise, before switching to portraiture in the 1890s and scoring several commissions from the court.

Partly deleted paraph on the reverse. Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
