Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Treudeutsche Grüße sendet [...]".

A representative of "Stimmungsimpressionismus", a style practiced by Austrian plein-air painters between 1870 and 1900, Hofmann specialized in landscapes, his motifs including coastal and marine scenery as well as his native Tyrol, but applied himself to architecture as well, designing the "Sonnenhof", the only Art Nouveau building in the district of Lienz.

Traces of a red round stamp; a purple oval stamp next to the postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
