Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Eigentlich eine Unsitte, Menschen die man nicht kennt und deren Character einem nicht klar sein kann in Schriftäusserungen zu sammeln. Schrift, die so sehr abhängig ist gerade vom Moment. Wenn Jemand z. B. in Eile ist, so wird er schon aus der Schrift falsch beurteilt werden müssen, wehe ihm aber wenn er mal gereizt oder deprimiert ist. Und wenn ich jetzt meinen Namen nicht darunter setze, betrüge ich Sie um das Beste - den Sport [...]".
After studying in Leipzig, Munich and Düsseldorf, Horst-Schulze received his first major commission, the decoration of the Gnadenkirche in Leipzig-Wahren. He created the interior design for the Art Nouveau villa of the merchant Max Haunstein, designed illustrations and book decorations, and in 1904 started teaching at the Royal Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Trade in Leipzig.
A few tiny ink spots; small creases near upper right and lower left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
