The creator of a wide-ranging oeuvre encompassing animal and nude studies, Hamburg street scenes, maritime paintings and portraits as well as fairy tale themes, Illies is best known for his Art Nouveau landscapes and the vanguard graphic works he produced for the Hamburg Künstlerklub, which he co-founded in 1897.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
