Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

A Neo-Baroque artist, Janssen specialized in tombs, equestrian statues and war memorials, and was commissioned, along with Josef Tüshaus (1851-1901), to produce the sculpture group "Vater Rhein und seine Töchter" for the visit of German Emperor Wilhelm to Düsseldorf in 1884, a work which proved so popular that a more durable version in bronze was created for a city fountain.

A few small creases and ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
