A versatile artist, Kögler's career took off in 1867 when he settled in Wiesbaden and became a popular portraitist and illustrator of family magazines such as the "Gartenlaube". He created genre paintings and still lifes and was commissioned with decorating the Ratskeller in Wiesbaden city hall in 1890.
