Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ich schreibe am liebsten mit Bleistift als mit dem Griffel des Zeichners. Demokratisierung mag gut sein, alte Aristokratie nichts wert. Also gründe man neue im Sinne meines Buches 'Ein Volk von Genies' Verlag Eugen Diederichs in Jena [...]".

Operating a private art school in Berlin before being appointed as professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Düsseldorf in 1909, Kunowski is best known for his idealistic books on art and artistic techniques, including the series "Durch Kunst zum Leben", one of its volumes titled "Ein Volk von Genies", calling on the general public to engage in creative work.

Traces of postmarks near left margin. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
