Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ihrem Wunsche entsprechend anbei d. Porträt eines hiesigen Majors, mit der Bitte um gefällige Empfangsanzeige. Dadurch, dass ich in der hiesigen Kunsthalle eine grössere Sonder Ausstellung meiner Werke arrang. hatte, entstand die lange Verspätung [...]".

With a brush-and-pencil portrait of a German major. Signed twice (below the inscription and below the drawing), with Leisten's address stamp.

A master of figural composition and pictorial narration, Leisten specialized in historical and genre painting; popular magazines like "Daheim" and "Die Gartenlaube" frequently published his scenes of Tyrolean peasant life. He painted noble families and equestrian portraits and also applied himself to etching, producing illustrations for the annual publications of the "Düsseldorfer Radirclub".

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
