Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Wenn es Ihnen Spass macht, weshalb nicht? [...]".

A founder of the Berlin "Studienateliers für Malerei und Plastik" in 1901, Lewin-Funcke was awarded a gold medal at the "Große Berliner Kunstausstellung" in 1905. He specialized in nudes and busts, the blind as well as children constituting recurring themes of his work. Some of his children's figurines were used as models for toys, notably by the doll makers Kämmer & Reinhardt.

Small smudged inkstain. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
