One of the most important representatives of German Impressionism, Liebermann painted scenes of the bourgeoisie as well as his garden near Lake Wannsee, was a noted portraitist receiving more than 200 commissions over the years, depicted Albert Einstein and Paul von Hindenburg, and served as president of the Berlin Secession from 1899 to 1911.

Postmark on verso slightly showing through; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
