Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

A professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts since 1879, Löfftz specialized in genre and landscape painting inspired by the Dutch and German masters of the 16th and 17th centuries. His impressive "Pietà" won him the gold medal at the 1883 International Exhibition in Munich.

Postmark on verso slightly showing through; faint traces of another postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
