Mannfeld, who specialized in etching, focused on landscapes and city views, created celebrated prints of the Cologne and Meißen cathedrals as well as of Cologne and Heidelberg, produced 60 illustrations for the 1877 and 1888 work "Durch's deutsche Land", and was appointed professor at the "Städelsches Kunstinstitut" in Frankfurt in 1895.

Postmark on verso slightly showing through; a few small creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
