Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Voici l'autographe demandé [...]".

Saint-Marceaux spent several years in Florence; his 1879 marble "Génie gardant le secret de la tombe" shows the influence of Michelangelo. He created several statues for Baron Rothschild for his Château de Ferrières as well as the tomb of Alexandre Dumas fils at the Paris Montmartre cemetery. The monument in front of the Universal Postal Union in Bern constitutes his best-known work.

Small creases near corners. Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
