Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Gewöhnlich so [...] zur Abwechslung auch so [...]".

Having studyied the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Canova and Thorwaldsen during an 1864 tour of Italy, Moest specialized in portrait busts. He served as a teacher at the Karlsruhe Kunstgewerbeschule since 1867, his Minerva sculpture group on the Konrad-Adenauer bridge between Mannheim and Ludwigshafen constituting his first major work.

Postmark on verso slightly showing through; faint traces of another postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
