Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.
Best known for his naturalist paintings tackling social issues, Roll depicted a miners' strike in 1880, as well as a construction site in Suresnes swarmed with masons, engravers and carpenters in 1885, the latter constituting his first naturalist plein air painting.
Several smudged ink spots; traces of postmarks; small creases near corners. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
