Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

A founding member of the "International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers" in 1898, Sauter mainly applied himself to portraiture, his work including 30 portraits of professors for the Jena University as well as several portraits of the family of the German chemist and glass technologist Otto Schott (1851-1935), who supported his career.

Very small tear in lower margin; a few small creases; some ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
