A representative of the Berlin school of sculpture, Schaper created monuments, equestrian statues, busts and tombs besides teaching sculpting as manager of the nude modelling studio from 1875, and as professor at the Prussian Academy of Arts from 1880 to 1890.
Several small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
