Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. The drawing shows Schenke's signature depiction of Satan in a top hat and glasses, writing with a quill.
A graduate of the Dresden Academy, Schenke created 143 bookplates and numerous illustrations, as well as several portraits and landscape paintings; his 1921 etchings for Goethe's "Faust" constitute his best-known work.
Traces of postmarks; small ink spots; small flaw to lower right corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
