Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Studying in Amsterdam, Munich and Paris, Schwartze advanced to a popular portraitist, painted the Dutch royal family in 1881, and exhibited her work at the 1904 "Internationale Kunstausstellung" in Düsseldorf.

A few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
