A versatile artist and one of the foremost representatives of the plein air style in Germany, Slevogt created paintings, stage designs and murals as well as watercolours and illustrations in the impressionist style, his main works including the 1902 painting "Das Champagnerlied", which is considered one of the most important works of German art around 1900, as well as 21 paintings he produced during his 1914 visit to Egypt in no more than 40 days.

Ink occasionally smeared; a few faint creases; postmark on verso slightly showing through. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
