After studying in Berlin and Düsseldorf and travelling Paris, Spain and Italy for a year, Spangenberg settled in Berlin in 1876, where he advanced to a popular portraitist, often depicting elegant women in opulent attire.

Traces of a small fold near upper left corner; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
