Starting out as a lithographer, Sperl resigned from his position as director of an Arnstadt lithography studio in 1865 when he was admitted to the Munich Academy, where he remained until 1875, creating historical and genre paintings before turning towards landscape painting in his later career.

Traces of postmarks; a few small creases near corners. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
