Alma-Tadema, Lawrence, Dutch-British painter (1836-1912). Autograph quotation signed.

[Postmark: London], 9. II. 1911.

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page.

Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "An autograph for cand. med. A. Scharlau [...]".

Awarded with medals at the 1863 Salon de Paris and the 1867 Paris World Fair, Alma-Tadema settled in London in 1870, where he advanced to one of the most popular Victorian painters. He specialized in classical themes, reaching wide recognition for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean sea and sky.

Traces of a horizontal fold; postmark on verso showing through. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
