Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Leider etwas verspätet, sende die besten Grüße [...]".

One the most productive contributors to the satirical magazine "Simplicissimus", Thöny, a native of South Tyrol, created more than 3,000 caricatures for the journal, featuring military, student and society themes, while as a painter he preferred hunting and riding motifs. His precise renderings of Berlin's high society and army officers contributed much to the success of the magazine, whose readership so well matched the subjects of his sketches. In 1908, at the height of his popularity, he bought a lakeside property in Holzhausen am Ammersee, an inspiring spot frequented by many artists at the time.

Several small ink spots and creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
