A cavalry officer during the Franco-Prussian War, Uhde created oil paintings of battle scenes as well as horse studies before settling in Munich as a professional painter, devoting himself mainly to religious and genre painting.
Traces of postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
