Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Wozu wollen Sie meinen Namen! Meine Arbeiten sollten Sie verlangen und lieben! [...]".

Best known for his lithographed bookplates frequently featuring female nudes, Volkert spent about 30 years in Munich, where he enrolled in the Academy in 1901 and created illustrations for magazines and books including the Bible before joining the naval officer and writer Felix Graf Luckner (1881-1966) on a two-year circumnavigation the world in 1926.

Traces of postal stamps. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
