Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Luxus ist der grösste Feind der Kunst (Hans v. Marées). (aus meiner Schrift 'Vom Sehen u. Gestalten', erschienen bei Eugen Diederichs in Jena) [...]".

After studying in Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin, Volkmann moved to Rome in 1876, where he remained for more than 30 years, creating male and female nude sculptures as well as reliefs and tombs, including one for his teacher, the painter Hans von Marées (1837-87).

His name stamp near left margin; a few small creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
