Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Specializing in historical painting, Wagner was internationally renowned for his depictions of important events of Hungarian history, was appointed professor at the Munich Academy in 1869, and turned towards painting bullfights, Spanish processions and Roman chariot races, as well as animals, particularly horses, in his later career.

Traces of a postal stamp; several creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
