Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Inspired by French plein air painting, Weise preferred landscapes as well as still lifes and portraits. He created illustrations for Grimm's Fairy Tales and Marie von Ebner Eschenbach's "Hirzepinzchen" and experienced a particularly creative period during the five years he lived in the Swiss town of Gottlieben from 1901 to 1906.

Some small ink spots; small crease near right margin. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
