Excellent professional photographs of Istana Besar, the royal palace of the Sultan of Johor in Johor Bahru. The residence was built in 1866 by Sultan Abu Bakar overlooking the Straits of Johor. The set comprises an external view of the residence as well as two images showing off the monarch's luxurious salon and dining room, featuring delicate furniture, large chandeliers and enormous vases, as well as paintings and a grand piano.

The photos were presumably taken by G. R. Lambert & Co., a Singapore photo studio founded in 1875 by the Berlin-born photographer Gustav Lambert. Setting up bases in the Deli Sultanate, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Borneo, the company quickly advanced to the biggest photo studio on the Malay Peninsula, producing some 3,000 images of the Far East at the turn of the century alone.

Cardboard somewhat browned and slightly foxed; images crisp and clean.
