In German, to an editor or publisher whom he sends an essay (not present here): "I have the honour of sending you an article by my childhood friend Karl Meyer of Santa Fe which seems to me well suited. Should you be unable to make use of it after all, please return it to me by booksellers' correpondence; should you feel it is acceptable in principle, but find yourself baffled by the somewhat unclear scrawl, I shall be happy to make any revisions such as may be necessary [...]" (transl.).

The Karl Meyer mentioned is very likely the Swiss emigrant who departed from New Orleans in 1849 to see California and in 1855 produced, with the Swiss publisher Sauerländer, his travelogue "Nach dem Sacramento. Reisebilder eines Heimgekehrten" (translated in 1938 as "Bound for Sacramento. Travel-Pictures of a Returned Wanderer").

On stationery with embossed monogram. Recipient's note on verso of counter-leaf. Slight soiling and staining; two creases.
