First edition. Rare specimen of missionary literature prepared by the protestant Basel Mission, showcasing their work in Coorg and Mysore in the South Indian state of Karnataka, as well as in the Nilgiri Hills or Blue Mountains, home of the indigenous tribal peoples of the Toda, Kota, Kurumba, Irula and Badagas. The fine steel-engraved illustrations depict missionary stations in Kaity and Merkara, city views of Maisur and Merkara, the surroundings of Almanda, and the Kateri waterfall, next to the Anglican bishop's residence in Madras, and Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri hills - the place generally considered the source of the river Kaveri and a holy place for many Hindus.
A second edition was published in Basel by Bahnmaier in 1860.
First issue lacking wrappers. Somewhat spotted throughout.
