Henri Lafontaine performed on all the important stages of Paris, including the Comédie-Française, where he had his debut in 1856 and was elected sociétaire in 1863. However, Lafontaine was not satisfied with the roles that were given to him at the Comédie, and so he left the theatre in 1871 together with his wife Victoria, an equally acclaimed actor, and returned to changing engagements, starting off with a successful production of Victor Hugo's "Ruy Blas" at the Odéon in 1872.

With recipient's notes. Some browning.
