The London-born Carpue had come to surgery only in his thirties, having previously considered as professions acting, law, bookselling and a career in the Catholic clergy. He ran a private anatomy school on Dean Street and was associated to the St. George's Hospital and the Duke of York Hospital in Chelsea. A skilled surgeon, Carpue is known for performing the first rhinoplastic surgery in England, using a technique created in India several centuries earlier.
