According to a collector's note, this letter is written to Major Henderson (1806-58), accepting a dinner invitation: "I shall be delighted to dine with you tomorrow at 7½ sharp, and will try to be sharp set [...]".
John Henderson (né Alexander), of Westerton, had served in India in the Rifle Brigade. Haliburton created the literary character "Sam Slick" in his famous, humorous "Clockmaker" series.
