First edition. This "study of human geography" addresses spatial relationships between communities, cultures, economies, and their interactions with the environment in Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Includes observations on each of the seven Emirates, the section on Abu Dhabi attesting a rather slow awakening since the discovery of oil in 1961, while Sharjah is said to remain a land of farmers and fishermen: "Petroleum has recently appeared [in Abu Dhabi] and entered the global market two years ago. Since that time, the Emirate has been yawning and stretching to wake up from its slumber, until it catches up with modern civilization, but this awakening is very slow [...] The most important activities of the people [in Sharjah]: trade, fishing, and agriculture in the Al Zaid Oasis [...] The Emir does not hesitate to encourage the agricultural side, and he himself begins planning and reclaiming the farms [...] The prince has a great ambition [...] and he hopes to find oil in the land of the emirate".
