An das Office of Works in London: "I enclose, herewith, two accounts for coals supplied to the new Embassy House from the 22nd October 1874, to the 31st of March 1875, for heating and drying it during the winter with a view to its early occupation. The Russian coals were used in the Hot air stoves by which the Public Rooms an the principal BedRooms [!] are heated, and the Bohemian brown coal was burnt in the fire places and stoves in the lower & upper stoves & in the servants rooms [...]".

Seit 1825 im diplomatischen Dienst stehend, war Buchanan u. a. in Rio de Janeiro, Konstantinopel, Washington, St. Petersburg, Madrid und von 1871 bis 1878 auch in Wien tätig.

Baron Lingen war seit 1870 als Schatzkanzler tätig und "at all events a most successful resister of importunate claims, and his undoubted talents as a financier were most prominently displayed in the direction of parsimony" (Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed.).
