Lodovico di Varthema, Schriftsteller und Entdeckungsreisender, um 1470-1517

Der italienische Entdeckungsreisende war der erste Christ, der die heiligen Stätten des Islam besuchte und darüber schriftlich berichtete. Zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts reiste er als Muslim verkleidet nach Mekka und Medina, wo er Mohammeds Grab sah und an den Bußübungen und Ritualen der Pilger teilnahm, musste dann aber fliehen und konnte über Persien nach Indien entkommen. Seine berühmt gewordene Reisebeschreibung („Itinerario“) erschien erstmals 1510, wurde in viele Sprachen übersetzt und erschien bis zur Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts in zahlreichen Auflagen. Die erste deutsche Ausgabe (Augsburg 1515) wurde von Jörg Breu d. Ä. mit 46 Holzschnitten illustriert.
