As the envelope is addressed to the dramatist and important librettist Philippe Gille (1831-1901), it can be speculated that both letters were addressed to this close friend.

In a letter apparently written from Vichy, Detaille explains that "Georges Berthaud has no official title with the Duc d'Aumale" and that the recipient should add an "h to his name". Georges Berthaud (1851-1905) was the son of general Jean-Auguste Berthaud and orderly to Henri d’Orléans, duc d’Aumale (1822-97). Pasted in the letter is a newspaper clipping that mentions the presence of Philippe Gille and Detaille in Vichy.

A very informal letter concerns Detaille's support for an unnamed and unspecified "candidate": "Son candidat me plait: mais en me le recommandant, ne profite pas de l'occasion pour me reprocher de ne pas être venu te voir à la campagne: tu dois être très doux […]".
