First edition. A collection of miscellaneous essays, sketches and poems, inscribed by the author, Count Ivo Vojnovic (1857-1929), who at the time of publication had only recently been released after three years of political imprisonment by the Austro-Hungarian Empire for having pushed for the creation of Yugoslavia. Indeed, many of Vojnovic's works were political, and his father and brother were also notably involved politically, though not always in alignment with Vojnovic himself.

Vojnovic's short inscription to a friend is dated Zagreb, October 1917: this places the inscription only shortly after his release from prison, during which he had become quite ill. In 1917 he was recovering at the hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Zagreb.

Vojnovic was a famous author and playwright of his age, born in Dubrovnik where today a street still bears his name. He had run-ins not only with the Austro-Hungarian government but also with the famous Croatian writer Miroslav Krleža (1893-1981), but published through it all, nearly until his death in 1929.
