XI. 1818): "I lament the situation of the person who brought it: but Lamentation and a dollar, is all I have to bestow on the unfortunate. I know nothing of Mr Rose and Mr Rose knows nothing of me, and therefore, I cannot say or do any thing about the passport in question. If our good Fishlake were here, something might be done; but as I know hardly any thing of his successor, nothing can be expected [...]".

Mit Lob auf seinen Sohn, der den Adressaten gerne kennenlernen möchte, ihm Auskunft zu dem vorherrschenden Geschmack der Engländer in Bezug auf ausländische Literatur geben könne, sowie einen Brief von Mr Adams überreichen solle: "When the mountain would not go to the Mahomet, Mahomet went to the mountain; and in like manner, when you do not write (as I expected) to me, I must needs take up the pen and write to you, although I am so much indisposed at the present moment, that I am hardly able to hammer out a letter. My son is at length arrived; he brings the inclosed for you from Mr Adams, who has likewise written to me [...] My son is a fine, and exceedingly well-informed young man and you may judge how happy I am in having him with me and of the emotions I felt on seeing him for the first time in my life. He longs to make your acquaintance and I long to see that event take place. He will have much to say to you about the prevailing taste in England for foreign literature, and expecially for the Spanish [...]" (o. D.).
