To the artist and interior designer Frank Hill Smith (1842-1904) in Boston, declining an invitation from the Papyrus Club, the esteemed literary organization founded in 1872: "Yours of the 7th received and noted. I regret much that I shall be unable at this time to accept the kind invitation from the Papyrus Club - but hope, at some future day, to have the pleasure of meeting its members and join with you in the hope of a personal acquaintance, and should I come to Boston I shall, without fail, call upon you - and hope, should you come my way, that you will do the same to me [...]".
Mounted on cardboard. One small tear to each page, not touching the text. 3 small strips of old mounting tape on verso.
