Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Starting his career as an artist in Prague, Kautsky was appointed theatre decorator at the Vienna State Opera in 1863. He co-owned the stage decorating company "Brioschi, Burghart und Kautsky", a studio commissioned by theatres at home and abroad, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Small creases near lower corners; some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
