Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Mit Vergnügen [...]".

Starting his training in his native Milwaukee, Marr completed his studies in Germany and was appointed professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1893. His paintings feature genre and religious scenes as well as groups of people; his monumental work "The Flagellants" is today held at the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend, Wisconsin.

Small creases near corners; a few tiny ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
